Title: Method of controlling aquatic weeds

Claims: I claim:

1. A method of destroying aquatic weeds in water which comprises contacting the weeds with an herbicidally-effective amount of a compound of the formula ##STR3## wherein R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, benzyl or phenethyl

R.sup.1 is methyl or ethyl;

R.sup.2 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; and

n is 0, 1 or 2.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the herbicidally-effective compound is of the formula ##STR4## wherein R is C.sub.4 -C.sub.8 alkyl;

R.sup.1 is methyl;

R.sup.2 is hydrogen or methyl; and

n is 0 or 2.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the herbicidally-effective compound is of the formula ##STR5## wherein R is C.sub.6 -C.sub.8 alkyl;

R.sup.1 is methyl;

R.sup.2 is hydrogen or methyl; and

n is 0 or 2.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the active compound is 1-(5-hexylthio-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)-1,3-dimethylurea.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the active compound is 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-(5-octylthio-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)urea.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the active compound is 1,3-dimethyl-1-(5-octylthio-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)urea.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the active compound is 1-(5-hexylsulfonyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)-1,3-dimethylurea.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the herbicidally-effective amount of the active compound is from 0.5 to about 10 ppm.
