Claims: What is claimed is:

1. In a magnetic brush developing apparatus for applying developing materials to a photoconductive surface including an electrostatic latent image in an electrostatic printing machine having a housing defining a sump zone, and wherein a transport means is provided therein to transport developing material to the proximate roller of said magnetic brush developing apparatus, a trimming bar assembly extending the width of said housing, which comprises:

an insulated trimming bar mounting means affixed to the housing;

a trimming bar positioned within said mounting means, said trimming bar being formed with a flat surface disposed substantially tangential to the proximate roller of said magnetic brush developing apparatus, said trimming bar having a knife edge extending towards said transport means;

said knife edge being formed by the terminus of the plane of said flat surface with a concave longitudinally extending inner surface formed in said trimming bar, said concave inner surface minimizing caking of said developing material; and

said trimming bar flat surface being arranged to converge toward the periphery of said magnetic brush developing apparatus roller whereby said trimming bar flat surface and said roller cooperate to compact the developing material following trimming thereof.

2. In a magnetic brush developing apparatus for applying developing material to a photoconductive member to develop latent electrostatic images thereon including a sump for holding a supply of said developing material, and at least one magnetic brush developing roller assembly for bringing developing material from the sump into operative developing relationship with said photoconductive member, said roller assembly including a rotatable exterior sleeve for carrying said developing material from said sump to said photoconductive member together with driving means for rotating said sleeve, the improvement comprising

means to compress developing material on said roller assembly sleeve before said material is brought into operative developing relationship with said photoconductive member;

said developing material compress means comprising a generally flat surface on said trim member opposite said roller assembly sleeve cooperable with the exterior of said roller assembly sleeve to form a converging passage through which said developing material is carried by said roller assembly sleeve;

the forward edge of said flat surface comprising the knife edge of a trim bar to trim excess developing material from said roller assembly sleeve upstream of said compress means; and said knife edge being the terminus of a concavity formed in the leading surface of said trim bar whereby to inhibit caking of developing material trimmed off.
