Title: Electrically assisted cycles

Abstract: An electrically assisted cycle, particularly but not exclusively a pedal bicycle or tricycle, wherein there is provided an electric motor which can assist the rider in propelling the cycle, the frame of the cycle supporting batteries for powering the motor. In order that the rider can only obtain electrical assistance there is provided a sensing arrangement for sensing the speed at which the chain wheel of the pedal assembly of the cycle is being rotated. The sensing means controls operation of an electrical switch in turn controlling energization of the motor. Thus, in order for the motor to be energized the rider must be rotating the pedals at a speed in excess of a predetermined speed.
