Title: 2-[[4-(2,3-Dihydro-2-oxo-1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)-1-(piperidinyl or 1,2,3,6-tetrahydro-1-pyridinyl)]alkyl]-1H-benz[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-d iones

Abstract: Compounds of the following formula and their acid addition salts ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are selected from hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, nitro, amino, trifluoromethyl, or cyano; R.sup.3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are selected from hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, or lower alkoxy; the dashed line indicates the optional presence of a double bond; and A is straight or branched chain alkylene of 1-8 carbons; are disclosed. These compounds exhibit antidepressant activity. In addition, these compounds are useful as antiinflammatory agents.
