Abstract: The system includes pumps for supplying negative and positive air pressure (with respect to atmospheric air) air to the negative and positive lumens, respectively, of a multilumen tube. The lumens are separated from each other by a partition wall within the tube. The negative air pressure lumen has a plurality of apertures distributed along the outer wall of the end portion of the tube and the positive air pressure lumen has an aperture in the partition wall adjacent each of the aforesaid apertures. The negative air pressure is steadily applied, while the positive air pressure is supplied in periodic pulses. The rate at which air passes into the positive air pressure lumen is visually indicated by bubbling the air through a transparent walled vessel and the rate at which air passes out through the negative air pressure lumen is indicated by bubbling the air through another transparent walled vessel. The positive air pressure is limited by an air relief valve to a safe value. An air inlet is provided to admit air into the positive air pressure lumen whenever its pressure drops below atmospheric air pressure. The dimensions of the tube, and the various other values of pressures, times, velocity of flow are given which permit the system to be operated with a novel method for evacuating an enclosed viscus and for releasing blockages in the tube.
