Abstract: A printer, suitable for operation by an electric computer, includes a traveling carriage. The carriage carries a type-head that is vertically and rotatably shiftable to properly orient a type element for printing. Movement of the carriage, as well as vertical and rotary movement of the type-head is produced by the use of cables actuated by electromagnets. The type-head is selectively shiftable to three vertically spaced positions and selectively rotatable to eight angular positions by vertically movable levers having cables controlling their ends. Stops are provided on the carriage for precisely locating the type-head in its vertical and angular positions. A movable stop mechanism prevents the carriage from overrunning its incremental positions of step-by-step movement. Release of the carriage drive to retract the carriage to a new starting position is accomplished by activation of the platen advancing mechanism.
